History of Medical Societies in Minnesota • MMA began in 1854 before Minnesota officially became a state in 1858 • Many well known Mayo staff were MMA presidents, i.e. Drs W.J. Mayo and C.H. Mayo • During the past decade, several ZVMS members have been MMA Presidents (Drs Amadio, Geier, Peterson, Maddox) • Olmsted County Medical Society began around 1880 • Zumbro Valley Medical Society(ZVMS) began in 1934
ZVMS Organization • Counties represented: Olmsted, Dodge, Fillmore, Houston • Officers: President, Vice-President, Secretary-Treasurer, Past President, Executive Director • Other Executive Committee members: committee chairs, residents, medical students, Alliance leadership • Three Standing Committees: Executive, Legislative, Environmental Medicine
ZVMS Community Activity • ZVMS is a member of the Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce • ZVMS members serve on several community organizations, including the Rotary Club of Rochester, Olmsted County Health Services Board, and Diversity Council, among many others
MMA • ZVMS members have or continue to serve as MMA officers, Board of Trustee members, and all MMA committees • Residents and Medical Students sit on MMA Board and committees • ZVMS is also represented on the MEDPAC Board
AMA • ZVMS members sit on the AMA House of Delegates as Minnesota and Specialty Society Representatives • ZVMS also has representatives on the Resident/Fellows and Medical Student Sections
ZVMS Administration • Carries out ZVMS policies set forth in its Constitution, Bylaws, Organizational Policies • Assures ZVMS financial stability • Maintains supportive relationship with members from Mayo Medical Center, Olmsted Medical Center, Federal Medical Center • Promotes ZVMS and MMA membership/participation • Manages membership rosters and billing for ZVMS and MMA members and Mayo staff who chose to be AMA members • Assists in preparing ZVMS committee agendas, minutes, and newsletter • Regularly collaborates with MMA and AMA staff • At annual MMA meeting recruits delegates, resolutions and reference committee members • Arranges for ZVMS Annual Dinner Meeting
Public Campaigns • Opposed DME (Coal Train) Project • Leadership on Freedom To Breathe Act locally and statewide • Opposed construction of Preston Tire Burning Facility (MPCA Testimony) • Advocated to RPU for Enhancement of Emission Control for Silver Lake Plant • Testified in Support of Methamphetamine Task Force recommendations • Promoted retrofitting of Rochester Buses for diesel exhaust suppression • Advocated to Rochester School Board for healthy food and beverage choices for students • Supported Environmental Commission on maintenance of Decorah Edge • National support for PAMTA Legislation
