We are excited to announce a 2019 extension of Neighborhoods United for Change…
In 2018, Neighborhoods United for Change hosted ten (10) tours between March 17 and August 31. 165 Saint Louis City residents went on those tours. Those 165 people shared their stories and histories, and openly shared ideas and resources. And they learned from each other. The 140 surveys which were completed showed that we learned…
… that we all want the same things: quality of life, good homes, good schools, access to resources and services, inclusion; … that we are all civic-minded, passionate city residents who are devoted to improving our communities; … that, in focusing on our own communities, we can lose sight of how neighbors who live just across town are doing; … that other folks know things and know how to do things that we don’t; … and the locations of restaurants & coffee shops all over the city!
And one participant keenly noted, “… we really need to take a [broader] view... We are going to be much stronger regionally if we broaden our focus and work together.”
Based on the concept of international sister cities but applied locally above and below Delmar, Sisterhoods will pair neighborhood associations and groups for year-long partnerships so they can continue the relationships formed during the 2016 and 2018 Neighborhoods United for Change tours and work TOGETHER by sharing ideas, resources, and culture. Building Bridges Across Delmar
The SLACO Sisterhoods Committee will… • Attend community meetings city-wide to introduce the Sisterhoods program; • Pair participating neighborhood associations and groups; • Facilitate communication between and provide support to participants; and • Host events and programs to facilitate relationship building and exploration of the city.
Sisterhoods Participants will… • Strive to understand and communicate their organization’s strengths and weaknesses; • Ask how they can be of service to their partner organization; • Engage in frequent communication with their partner; • Attend a majority of their partner’s meetings and events; • Plan and engage in social and service activities together; and • Have fun and celebrate accomplishments!
If you have come here to help me, you are wasting your time. But if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together. ~ Lilla Watson
