  2. RHYTHM • A pattern of recurring strong and weak syllabic stress in the flow of poetry

RHYTHM CONT… • Get set, ready now, jump right in Bounce and kick and giggle and spin Listen to the rope when it hits the ground Listen to that clappedy-slappedy sound Jump right up when it tells you to Come back down, whatever you do Count to a hundred, count to ten Start to count all over again That’s what jumping is all about Get set, get ready, jump right out!

  4. RHYME AND SOUND • Identical (or very similar) recurring final sounds in words at the ends of lines • Couplet- two rhyming lines in succession • Triplet-Three rhyming lines in sequence

  5. REPETITION • Adds to the rhythmic quality of a poem • Emphasizes the sounds of words • Makes poetry exciting

  7. ASSONANCE • Involves repetition • The poet repeats identical or similar vowel sounds to create a partial rhyme • The final consonant sound is usually different

  8. STORM- KRISTINE O’CONNELL GEORGE • Late in the afternoon The wind begins to blow Whistle-sharp, wet and cold. Whitecaps lace the lake. Uneasy, the birds Dart from tree to tree As heavy black clouds Rumble towards us, An oncoming train Hauling a thunderous Load of storm. Rain!

CONSONANCE • Also refers to the repetition of sounds • The repetition of final consonant sounds in words with different vowels • The words do not rhyme, but they help create harmony within the poem • The Drum • Daddy says the world • Is a drum • Tight and hard • And I told him • I’m gonna beat out • my own rhythm

  10. LAYOUT OR LINE BREAKS • Poetry looks different than prose • The lines of poetry often reflect meaning • Line breaks are carefully designed to signal to the reader the meaningful phrase units that represent deeper meanings

  11. White space in a poem signal the reader to take a breath or pause • It leaves time to reflect

  12. TONE • The poet’s attitude as revealed in the poem • Tone is highly related to mood- how the poem makes the reader feel
