  1. 2.6.3 eDNA Calibration & Transition Federal Partners Workshop Dr. Richard Lance, USACE ERDC

  2. Introduction and Objectives • A workshop was held among partner Federal agencies during 9-10 FEB 11 at ERDC in Vicksburg, MS, to kick start development of proposals for improving and expanding tools that mission-lead agencies can use to assess and manage risks against a sustainable population of Asian carp arriving in the Great Lakes from the Chicago Area Waterway System (CAWS). • Discussed transition of primary eDNA responsibility to USFWS. • Discussed Asian Carp Control Strategy Framework actions 2.51-2.5.3 on potential vectors for carp or eDNA movement past electrical barrier • Discussed needs and a roadmap for proposals addressing this area

  4. Draft Road Map Sub-Task 1. Product: Development of a SME conceptual model on ways eDNA can potentially appear in water bodies. Sub-Task 2. Product: Enhanced throughput of eDNA processing. Sub-Task 3. Product: New, more informative genetic markers Sub-Task 4. Product: Better understanding of DNA assay sensitivity under no flow conditions Sub-Task 5. Product: Better understanding of DNA assay sensitivity under flowing water conditions Sub-Task 7. Product: Quantified relationships between different major environmental factors and eDNA degradation under flowing water conditions Sub-Task 6. Product: Quantified relationships between different major environmental factors and eDNA degradation under no flow conditions Sub-Task 8. Product: Develop guidance on using calibration data to broadly estimate Asian carp abundance under no flow conditions Sub-Task 9. Product: Develop guidance on using calibration data to broadly estimate Asian carp abundance under flowing water conditions Sub-Task 10. Product: Hydrodynamic eDNA transport predictive model to characterize fish population. Sub-Task 11. Product: Risk management decision model to characterize risks and evaluate alternative risk management actions.

  5. Future Plans • First outlines of proposals for each component of road map due 21 Feb. • Follow-up meeting scheduled for late March/ early April
