  1. Learning-Centered Teaching Brian and Bev Teaching enhancement workshop 2012

  2. Perspective • “One might argue that it is not enough to merely teach –the most important element is that students learn. Teaching and learning are not necessarily synonymous”. • How many of us were taught how to teach? • How many of us were taught how students learn? • What –or who– were your inspirations to become an educator? • What kind of teacher are you? • What, then, is the role of the instructor and the student in TCT and LCT environments?

  3. What’s the difference? Teaching Centered Learning Centered • “What do I want to do today?” • Role of instructor is… • To impart knowledge • Answer questions • Evaluate student performance • Role of the student is.. “What do the students need to know or do, and how can I get them to know or do it?” Role of the instructor is… Role of the student is…

  4. Transitions • How do we make the transition from teaching centered- to learning centered teaching? • USC: “Learner-centered teachers articulate what we expect our students to learn, design educational experiences to advance their learning, and provide opportunities for them to demonstrate their success in achieving those expectations”. • Think about that for a minute… • Think about learning outcomes
