The Challenge The challenge being put forth is to develop an online dashboard for researchers or other relevant end-user group (data entrepreneurs, students, health publications/press, etc.) attempting to identify and examine comparative effectiveness, health services, and health policy research topics within the American health system. The dashboard should capture data from two or more of these new Basic Stand Alone (BSA) Medicare Claims Public Use Files in a way that addresses the needs and interests of the chosen target end-user group. Our SOLUTION ( MEDZ ) • MEDZ is a rich and interactive web based dashboard that displays an aggregate view of Medicare Claims Data across all the 8 PUFs. It provides users with a comprehensive tool to analyze the vast dataset, perform in-depth analysis and get quick answers. • A companion mobile application that provides users on the go, the ability to view and filter the Claims Data.
Our SOLUTION ( MEDZ ) Sample scenarios, where MEDZ can help provide answers for: • Claim information for males between the age group of 65 and under for all the 8 PUF’s. • Claim information for Medicare Part A for females. • Inpatient Claims, for females of age group 85 and older where the length of stay was 8 or more days and who have had a heart failure/shock. • Identify the number of “Cpap full face mask” that were supplied for the patients of age group 85 and older.
Our SOLUTION ( MEDZ ) Some findings using MEDZ: • There were about 3.3 million patients who were prescribed brand name drugs but did not pay anything. Also, the average claim per patient was $179.51, of which the average amount for male was $202.96 and for female was $162.96. • The average claim amount for Medicare Part B was $75.25 • In the Hospice Beneficiary Claims there were 33 males under 65yrs. who deceased at discharged and had non-infectious respiratory disease. • There were 192,163 patients who went to the ER for “General symptoms”.

TECHNICAL COMPONENTS • Server side component developed using Java. • REST based services layer between the frontend and the server. • SQL Server database to house all PUF data. • Adobe Flash ( Flex ) based frontend to deliver a Rich Internet Application. • Android mobile application based on Adobe Flash.
FeaTures • Comprehensive dashboard spanning all 8 PUFs. • Overview based on PUF information as well as Medicare Part A, B and D information. • An informative, interactive, simple and user friendly application. • Extensive filtering options to get summarized as well as specific answers. • Ability to export results to a comma separated (CSV) file or print to PDF. • Users can share contents of the dashboard using FaceBook and Twitter.

FILTER DASHBOARD CONTENTS Filter the data by checking/unchecking the different data values for each section. You can also search for the data values using the search box. Click Close to cancel out your selection and return to the dashboard. After making your selection, click Filter to update the dashboard.
MEDZ DASHBOARD Using the Dashboard is really as simple as: • Selecting your PUF or the Overview. • Defining your selection criteria. • Clicking Filter.
MEDZ COMPANION MOBILE APP. To support mobile users using the Android platform, we have deployed a companion mobile application on the Android Market called “MEDZ”. • The app has a simple and intuitive user interface. • Claim information for all eight PUFs on the common attributes of gender and age group are available. • It doesn’t provide all the features as found in the web based dashboard. • An app for iPhone is developed but due to time constraints and approval requirements, we couldn’t deploy on the Apple AppStore.
MOBILE SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS • Application available for download on Android Market called MEDZ. • Android Smartphone running version 2.2 and above. • Adobe AIR Mobile 2.7 ( application will automatically download if required).
