OJT cont. • Most used type of training • Learn job by observing • Cons • Trainer has no skills to teach • can teach mistakes • Trainer may feel threatened by new employee • Pros • Its cheaper • Training transfers immediately
OJT cont. • Ters must want to do the training • Ters must get a reward for OJT • Ters and Tees should be carefully paired • Use train the trainer programs • Ters can not exploit tees
OJT cont. • Tees should b e rotated to account for weaker ters • Firm must realize that it takes time to train. May slow things down. • Tees must be able to handle close supervision
Apprenticeship Training • Done in 612% of all firms • Implemented by a joint committee of labor and management • Lasts from 2 to 5 years • Combines OJT with a minimum of 144 classroom hours • Journeyman are considered role models
Coaching • EE knows what er thinks of performance • Allows ees to improve • Increased communication • Establish long and short career goals
