  3. Callout • Drowning or Missing Person/Craft • Objective – to recover the casualty or craft – WITHOUT RISK TO SAFETY OF TEAM • Each SAR Team/Club Callout Procedure • Data on Callouts • CFT/Club • Other Agencies/Organisations

  4. Weather Conditions • Weather – factor that contributes • Callouts often marginal conditions • Searches take longer than recreational • Hypothermia • Shallow water – longer bottom time • Fresh water colder than sea

  5. Search Conditions • Can often be in poor/ nil visibility • Urban area/ close to bridge/ pier • Strong flowing water/ currents • Possibility of Pollution

  6. Personnel • Not for the faint hearted ! • Adverse weather conditions/Active/fit • Confined to divers with appropriate skills and experience • Must be a team player • Willing to practise skills • If uncomfortable with diving aspects, many other jobs to be done on the surface

  7. The Casualty • DO consider how long casualty in water • Difference fresh water/sea water • Locating the Casualty • Signal buddy • Decide recover/mark location/surface/discuss

  8. Recovery • Easier for some • If uncomfortable – leave to others • Decay – recovery difficult • Mark and decide best recovery method • Separate lecture on Recovery

  9. Confidentiality • Respect for the deceased • Understanding/empathy with relatives • Treat with sensitivity • AVOID interaction with relatives • Refer to SAR DO (liaison person) • Avoid “pub talk”
