Program Review 2012 A Dialogue on Success
Program Review 2012 • Summary of Findings in Themes • Current Status of Submissions • Sustainable CPI
Findings In Themes • Institutional level themes • SLO Themes • Success Themes
Institutional Level Themes “The Program Review Committee (PRC) observes that as compared to the 2010 program review cycle, financial circumstances are affecting West Valley College and are taking their toll on staff and faculty morale and the student learning environment.”
Institutional Level Themes • Improve the Basic Skill of Students • New Faculty and Staff Hiring • Supplies (duplication/software tools) • General Program Funding • Class Size
SLO Committee - Integrated Themes • Technological guidance and support for faculty / students • Face to face and online lab environments • Basic skills assessments • Support for professional development time • Increase in interdisciplinary work in the College’s academic and student success programs • Financial support for textbooks and transportation to and from the college
A Dialogue on Success • Programs’ response to low success • Rigor – Our programs are simply more rigorous than others • Students – West Valley students are not college ready • New Hire – Need more faculty to relieve the stress and class size • Efficiency – Emphasis and pressure is placed on efficiency • Demographics – Programs attract younger students who are not as prepared as older students • Open Access – We let in anyone who wants a seat
A Dialogue on Success • Questions for dialogue • Why do programs with efficiency above the College goal feel that they are being driven to these higher levels of efficiency? • Why do many of the higher efficiency programs with rigorous academic requirements also have no course pre-requisites?
A Dialogue on Success • Questions for dialogue • How can programs with high efficiency experiment with success strategies such as adopting pre-requisites in reading and writing without fearing ramifications of lower efficiency? • Is there a way to evaluate a program’s quality based on a ratio of efficiency to student success?
2013 – Sustainable Continuous Quality Improvement • CPI • Identify new PR delivery system: • CurricUNET • Zoomerang or Survey Monkey • Get feedback - Breakout session with Program Leaders at Spring All Campus Day • Increasingly more collaboration with SLO and Curriculum Committees.
