TRANSITION & SPECIAL TEAMS IN GAME COMMUNICATION TERMINOLOGY RIDES CLEARS MAN-UP MAN-DOWN TRANSITION SUBSTITUIONS
IN GAME COMMUNICATION ONLY COACHES ARE ALLOWED TO TALK TO REFS OR OPPOSING COACHES DURING GAME PLAY. Make sure the Substitution Box is clear. Riding and Clearing strategy is established prior to game. (Adjustments will be made in game) Man Up and Down strategies are established and set in practice. (Based on game situations)
RIDING - Concepts Effort/Hustle/Heart Back Check - Rag the ball Talk to each other. (“I’m going”, “Loose” and “Tight”) Types of Rides “Tight” – Cover a man/Jump the ball Need the ball Force Goalie to carry Force cross field pass “Loose” – Get back/Slow down transition Middies get back Slow down opponent
CLEARING - Basics Break out with your head up. Listen to the Goalie (“Clear” or “Break”) Talk to each other. (“They’re on me”, “Across” and “Here’s your help”) LSM gets to sideline quicklyor Ready to retreat to hole. Be Patient. Goalie has options
CLEARING -Goalie Speak Loud (“Clear” or “Break”) Have to direct the defense (“Cross” or “Up”) Never outlet toward the box If the offense Hard ride? (Free clear, 4 and around, outlet quickly) If the offense soft ride? (Walk the ball up/Look for the 2 v 1) D-Men walk with Goalie. (Easy outlets)
CLEARING - Progression Phase 1 – Goalie hits streaking Middies or LSM Phase 2 – Goalie moves ball to parallel D-Man Phase 3 – Middle D and Middie cut towards ball side. Phase 4 – Cross Field to opposite side D-Man Phase 5 – Opposite Side D-Man carries up field Phase 6 – Same Side Middies look up and clear. Opposite Middie back.

TRANSITION – Fast Break Three types of Fast Breaks Flat Break – (Set up of the Face Off, Shooters curling up from wings) Slow Break – (If L break is not there, we attack from X) Secondary Break – (Middle Sweep from Top)
SUBSITUTIONS - Concepts Listen to coaches, Be DISCIPLINED Together with your line mates. We are subbing through the box or midfield. Support each other during “Yellow” on offense.(Slowdown and be patient) Once the appropriate personnel is on the field, last player coming on calls out formation.
“EAGLE” Sub thru Box Middie substitutions . (LSM gets off immediately for offensive middie) Defensive middies support, till all substitutions are made. Players need to focused on the field and on sideline. Always with your line mates. (Established prior to game time) Know the situation. Closest Middie to the sideline comes off first. (Sprint to Sideline) New Middie coming on lets the next middie know to come off.
“EAGLE” Sub thru Midfield The Progression Yellow on offense settle the ball “Air Out” D-man step off defensive side of field into box Middie 1 replaces D-Man on Defensive side of field. Middie 2 on offense sprints to Midfield line. Once over the line, Middie 2 replace. Middie 2 sprints to box and is replaced by next offensive middie. Once all new offensive player are on, D-man steps back on field.
