  2. Nutrition • Nutrients are chemicals that are used to: • Provide energy • Provide building blocks • Function in chemical reactions

  3. Nutrition • Nutrients can be divided into 6 major groups: • Carbohydrates • Proteins • Lipids • Vitamins • Minerals • Water • Essential nutrients must be ingested

  5. Nutrition • Energy in food is measured in kilocalories (Cal) • 1 gram of protein or carbohydrate gives 4 Cal • 1 gram of fat gives 9 Cal
