blockade: • a closing off of an area to keep people or supplies from going in or out • USS Constitution was one of six frigates authorized for construction by an act of Congress in 1794. Joshua Humphreys designed them to be the Navy’s capital ships.
doctrine: • a statement of official government policy, especially in foreign affairs • The Monroe Doctrine asserted the US would not accept European interference in American affairs.
embargo: • A government order that stops merchant ships from leaving or entering a country’s ports • President Jefferson wanted to halt trade to force Britain and France to leave American ships alone.
