The Circulatory System what does it mean & how it applies to you
FUNCTIONS • 1. To pump/send/deliver blood carrying oxygen and nutrients to the body • 2. To take away wastes (CO2 and other by products)
Components • Heart • Muscle that pumps blood throughout the body. • Blood Vessels • Arteries - carries oxygenated blood (red) • Veins - carry oxygen depleted blood • Capillaries-small vessles that allow the exchange of oxygen and wastes to cells
BLOOD • Red Blood Cells • White Blood Cells-fight infection and disease • Platelets-help blood clot • Plasma-liquid part of blood • Hemoglobin-iron in red blood cells that binds and carries oxygen
Process • The blood vessels are a closed system, arteries… capillaries… veins; the heart pumps with every beat it pushs blood through this system, sending blood to ever cell in the body.
Problems • Cardiovascular disease-plaque or fatty deposits build up inside ateries or veins, closing down those vessels and blocking blood from the heart • Anemia-not enough iron in the blood, therefore blood does not carry enough oxygen-easily tired and winded
