Lesson 2 Vocabulary • economy- • The way people in a state use resources to meet their needs • industry- • All the businesses that provide one kind of product
Lesson 2 Vocabulary • strike- • To stop working • Labor union- • A group of workers that take action to improve their working conditions • Great Migration- • The movement when thousands of African Americans migrated North.
Lesson 2 How did New Jersey grow and change in the early twentieth century?
A Growing Economy • After the Civil War- NJ’s economy grew rapidly. • WHY? • NJ’s large numbers of workers had good roads and waterways. • Close to Philadelphia and New York City
Oil, Ships, and Canned Goods • As the economy grew, natural resources from other states were brought in. • Industries used those natural resources to make finished products. • 1877- Standard Oil Company- turned oil into fuel and by 1912 was one of the largest oil refineries in the world
Oil, Ships, and Canned Goods cont. • Shipbuilding- Hoboken and Elizabeth built many ships because they were close to the water • Fishing boats, canal barges, and tugboats • 1869-Anderson and Campbell canning factory opened. • Located in Camden, started with tomatoes and then eventually soup • Today- Campbell’s Soup Company

A New Century • Growth of industry More factories • More factories more workers • By 1900- 2 million people lived in New Jersey
New Jersey Inventors Thomas Edison • Two labs- Menlo Park & West Orange • Him and his team of engineers created many inventions • 1879-Most well-known first usable electric light bulb
New Jersey Inventors Lewis Lattimer • African American • Directed Edison’s team • They built first electric power station in New York City.
New Jersey Inventors • John P. Holland- built one of the first submarines • Eldridge Johnson- Edison’s record player was improved by this man and his machine was called the Victrola original iPod!
Immigrants • Growing industries=more jobs=more people • People moved to NJ from- Britain, Ireland, Germany, Italy, and other countries • Ellis Island- immigrant station in New York Bay. • Ellis Island (Photos,videos,audio) • Working conditions in factories were poor People worked long hours and children often worked to help support their families
Labor Unions • To get better working conditions, workers… • went on strike to make changes to the poor working conditions. • Formed labor unions • Over time NJ began making changes to improve people’s health.
Question Time! • Why did people immigrate to New Jersey?
The Great Migration1910-1920 • 1914 war in Europe started. (WW I) • Because there was a war going on, fewer immigrants came over to work in factories. • Factory owners noticed this and faced a shortage of workers. • This news spread to the south, and soon many African Americans came north looking for better paying factory jobs.
