Faculty Classifications REGULAR: Responsibilities include teaching, scholarship and service. Full rank applies. ANNUAL: Responsibilities include teaching, limited responsibilities for service and no scholarship requirements. Rank, instructor. TERM: Teach a specified number of semester units for a single term. Renewable and full rank applies as adjunct.
Key Features of Faculty Classifications 9 or 12 month appointment for regular or annual. FT or PT. Academic titles differ among classifications. Fringe benefits accrue at an FTE of .5 or above. No benefits for Term (adjunct) faculty. For more information, please see the Faculty Handbook.

Qualifications for each Classification Qualifications to any classification are dependent on length and quality of teaching experience, scholarly productivity, service and leadership. Qualifications for nursing faculty are dependent on BRN regulations for pre-licensure and FNP faculty. Other specialties have their own faculty qualifications for licensure or certification.
Moving Within Classifications The AVPmust approve any classification change from annual or term (adjunct) to the REGULAR classification using the New Hire Recommendation Form. Department Deans and Chairs are authorized to change a REGULAR appointment to either annual or term, without AVP consultation. Conversion of any nine or 10-month to 12-month appointment must have AVP authorization. Deans and Chairs are authorized to approve 12 to nine-month appointments. Term of Employment SMU does not have TENURE, rather a system of renewable appointments ranging from 1-3 years. Variable terms of employment apply only to faculty in the REGULAR classification. New faculty generally begin their teaching career on a 1-year renewable, regular appointment.

AVP discretion on rank of instructor, assistant professor and associate professor at initial appointment (not promotion): R and P determines full professorships for both initial appointment and promotion.
