5 national programmes in the ‘Staffing South Africa’s Universities’ Framework and a cross-cutting institutional programme SSAUF-Development Programme: The collection of staff development activities implemented by universities as part of their UCDP PLans
Nurturing Emerging Scholars Programme (NESP) • Conceptualization underway. • Feeder into the nGAP. • Recruit high achieving postgraduate students for honours or masters level study. • Contracted as intern academics – service obligation on completion. • Attractive scholarship and stipend package that enables full time study • Access to research development programmes, teaching development programmes, mentorship, and an international mobility experience (masters interns). • Some (limited) work responsibility/experience – tutoring, lab assistant, research assistant, co-teaching etc. • Concept still to be discussed and refined with sector involvement. • Possibility of a pilot in latter part of 2019, as part of a South Africa-France international scholarship programme.
New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) • Investment +/- R2,500,000 per nGAP lecturer.
University Staff Doctoral Programme (USDP) • Tripartite partnerships: At least 3 universities, at least one being a SA HDI or UoT, and one being a universityfrom a partner country. • For academics and professional staff, South African citizens or hold SA permanent residency, permanent staff. • 80% of the supported cohort should be Black and/or women staff members 45 or younger. • Creative and innovative supervision models could be explored, which could also have a supervisory capacity development focus. • Programme uses a blended delivery modality – online and contact in SA and abroad; aim to have students complete the doctorate in a period of 4 years. • Each student able to spend an appropriate amount of time at the university abroad, at an appropriate point(s) during their PhD programme when maximum benefit will be derived from the experience abroad. Should also benefit from teaching development and research development opportunities during this period. • Investment +/- R500,000 per USDP scholar.
