Silhouettes and Shadows. Purpose Of the project.
E N D
Purpose Of the project • In this project I am to create a number of creative and interesting images with the use of shadows and silhouettes this must be pared with an interesting and eye catching background. I like this as its shows I have more skill than just taking a simple silhouette or landscape image it also allows more freedom with my creativity.
Contextual research • I researched the photographer George Mayer, I picked this photographer because of the images he created they show emotion and have a real feeling to them which is what I like in an image. they are also possible to recreate allowing me to add and take away elements as to make the most interesting and successful images.
Studio Workshops • Coloured lighting – we used coloured jells over the lights. • Lighting techniques – using more than one light to create different highlights and shadows. • Silhouette lighting framing – making the image symmetrical or using the rule of thirds to make the image pleasing to the eye • Multi light setup – using a number of different lights safely and productively • Using a smoke machine to add an interesting element
Location Photography • Photos taken outside in Kendal using the sun to make silhouettes these were done by blocking out the sun entirely to make a really clear image they also show more of the surroundings of the image this means the image has more then just silhouettes adding another element.
Darkroom workshops In this workshop I used a range of different items to create shapes on a piece of paper I created a scene with a wolf, mountain and houses this was then covered in salt and moss to create a texture and a almost snowy feel to the image. I could add more elements to the image including a greater and clearer texture this would also accompany a better cut out shapes maybe a easier to understand overall image as my final piece was not in proportion due to the wolf being much bigger then the house this didn’t look right and I would have to improve this if I did it another time. My idea could also have been improved allowing a longer time thinking and prepping for the image this would result in cleaner cut out shapes and a better overall outcome.
Independent ideas • Throughout the whole project I have used a number of my own independent ideas this helped me understand the project that much clearer and resulted in a better overall product. I took inspiration from other photographers using my own twist on the ideas they had this creates a really interesting and new style.
What I learnt from this project • In this project I learnt a number of different and useful skills I can use in my FMP and up coming shoots I may do. I learnt how to light a shot and how to colour said lighting I used these techniques to create a number of useful and somewhat complicated Images using lots of different lights. • I also learnt how to organise a shoot without the help of the tutor this shows I have good ideas and I am independent with some of my work this is a very good skill to have. • I learnt how to use the darkroom to create creative and bizarre images that show emotion and portray a story or scene. • For my future projects I would like to experiment with the use of coloured lights and maybe add more elements like more smoke or coloured smoke.
