  2. Introduction • Today we will continue learning about mean, media, mode and range. • Research one of three topics and work out the mean, median, mode and range of the data set you have collected.

  3. Learning Intentions • To learn what is meant by the terms: mean, median, mode and range • To learn how to calculate mean, median, mode and range • To use sports (interest) to reinforce learning of mean, median, mode and range in statistics

  4. Mean • The mean is the average of a data set! • What is the Mean of this data set? 4, 3, 2, 4, 2, 2

  5. Median • The median is the middle value in a date set! • What is the Median of this data set? 41, 13, 30, 32, 27

  6. Mode • The mode is the most frequently occurring number in a date set! • What is the Mode of this data set? 28, 13, 23, 20, 24, 33, 20, 24

  7. Range • The range is the difference between the lowest and highest value in a data set! • What is the Range of this data set? 87, 118, 104, 58, 85, 110, 125, 90

  8. Model Investigation – Michael Jordan’s first 10 games in the NBA • 16, 21, 37, 25, 17, 25, 22, 27, 45, 27 – (VALUES) • Range: difference between the highest and lowest number (value) • Highest: 45 Lowest: 16 Range = 45-16 = 29 • Mode: most frequently occurring number (value) • Mode = 25 & 27 as they both occur more than any other numbers • Median: the middle number/s • Put into ascending order (lowest number to highest number): 16, 17, 21, 22, 25, 25, 27, 27, 37, 45 • The middle number is 25, therefore the median = 25 • Mean: the average • 16 + 21 + 37 + 25 + 17 + 25 + 22 + 27 + 45 + 27 = 262 • Divide the total by the number of values (in this case, 10) • 262 divided by 10 = 26.2 • Mean = 26.2 points averaged by Michael Jordan in his first 10 NBA games.

  9. Task – Interest Investigation • Option 1: • In groups of 3, research the number of goals scored by Manchester United in the Premier League this season! CHOOSE 12 GAMES ONLY! Organise your data in a way that is easiest for you to understand (i.e. tally or stem-and-leaf plot), graph the information using Excel, then work out the mean, median, mode and range of this set of data. • Option 2: • In groups of 3, research the scores by the Houston Rockets in the NBA Playoffs this season! Organise your data in a way that is easiest for you to understand (i.e. tally or stem-and-leaf plot), graph the information using Excel, then work out the mean, median, mode and range of this set of data. • Option 3: • In groups of 3, research the scores made by the Adelaide Thunderbirds this season! Organise your data in a way that is easiest for you to understand (i.e. tally or stem-and-leaf plot), graph the information using Excel, then work out the mean, median, mode and range of this set of data. • Alternate: Choose your favourite sport and negotiate a topic to research with the teacher.
