Jupiter Part 2 Appearance and Rings
Jupiter’s Shape Jupiter spins very fast and Jupiter is not solid As a result it bulges around the equator significantly.
The Appearance of Jupiter Jupiter has colorful bands of clouds at different depths: Red highest, then white, brown and blue lowest. They probably form when the ammonium hydrosulfide reacts with methane forming colorful compounds (polysulfides, acetylene and organic phosphorus). The Coriolis effect creates jet streams which are much faster than Earth’s They divide the clouds into bands which alternate direction of flow
Rising gasses and the Coriolis effect form vortices similar to Hurricanes on Earth Usually their color is white or brown. Of course the biggest and longest lasting is red. The “Great Red Spot” is bigger across than Earth and has lasted for at least 400 years! Storms
The storms on Jupiter generate lightning just like those on Earth!
Jupiter’s Ring Jupiter has a thin ring of dust and rocks trapped by its gravity so that they orbit around it. It is thought to be replenished when moons that get too close to Jupiter are torn apart by tidal forces
