JOINTS OF head & neck 1- T.M.J 2- Atlanto-occipital joint (articualtion between occipital condyles of the skull & atlas vertebrae) 3- Atlanto- axial joints (articulation between atlas & body of axis)
There are two bones which make up the TMJ,the temporal bone and the mandible.
T.M.J 1- Type of joint : Synovial joint 2- Articualr surface : • A bove : articualr tubecle & Md. Fossa of the temporal bone • Below : condyloid process ( head of Md.) 3- capsule : attached arround articualr surface a bove & below 4- The intracapsualr articualr disc : The joint cavity is divided into an upper & a lower compartments by an intra articular disc of fibrocartialge The upper surfce of the disc is concavo-convex to fit into articualr tubercle while the lower surface is cocave to fit into the head of mandible.
5- Accessory ligament: a ) lateral (temporomandibualr ligament) (the main ligament of T.M.J) it’s triangualr in shape , it’s base is attached to the root of zygoma while it’s apex attached to the lateral aspect of neck of Md. b ) spheno-mandibualr ligament: It’s attached above to the spine of sphenoid & below to the lingula of Md. C ) stylo- mandibualr ligament: It’s attached above to the lat. Aspect of styloid process & below to post. Border of ramus of Md. d) Pterygomandibualr ligament: It extends to the post. End mylohyoid line of Md. 6- Nerve supply of joint: Auriculo Temporal Nerve
