  3. Today’s Agenda!! • Subject-Verb Agreement • Whiteboard Game • How to Write your Outline

  4. Nouns • A noun is a person, place, thing, or idea. • A noun is the subject of a sentence. A sentence MUST have a noun/subject. • In the following examples, help me find the noun(s): • The cat ran into a wall as he was chasing the rat. • I want to buy a computer. • His hair is out of control today because of the crazy wind.

  5. Identify the Noun • In your notebook, label your paper #1-5. Simply write down all of the nouns in each example. • 1.) The little boy knew that he would have to learn the alphabet in class. • 2.) John needs a computer to do all of his research. • 3.) The cup was filled with water when he accidentally spilled it on the floor. • 4.) I wanted to buy the new dress at the store, but I forgot my wallet. • 5.) Jamie studied all weekend, so she could do well on her test.

  6. Verbs • A verb is a word used to express an action, a condition, or a state of being. • Along with a noun, a sentence must also have a verb. It is the action of the sentence. • In the following examples, help me find the verb(s): • The cat ran into a wall as he was chasing the rat. • I am so hungry. • His hair is out of control today because of the crazy wind.

  7. Identify Verbs • Again, in your notebook, label your paper #1-5. Simply write down all of the verbs in each example. • 1.) I was walking last weekend, when my dog attacked a cat. • 2.) She never knew that thunder came after lightening. • 3.) When Jamie walked to the park, she got some bad allergies. • 4.) He is a funny comedian on television. • 5.) Max forgot to make the bed this morning, so his mom was really mad at him.

  8. Nouns and Verbs Must AGREE!! • The nouns and verbs in a sentence must agree with each other, which means they have to go together. • A verb must agree with its subject in number. • Number refers to whether a word is singular or plural. • Let’s take a look…

  9. AGREES SINGULAR SUBJECT SINGULAR VERB Nouns and Verbs • Singular subjects take singular verbs. • The new museumdisplays works by local artists. You could not say, “The new museums displays works by local artist.” The subject and verb do NOT agree!!

  10. Singular Examples • The girlruns through the woods. • When the cateats, she makes a lot of noise. • Heneeds to go to the library for books.

  11. AGREES PLURAL SUBJECT PLURALVERB Nouns and Verbs • Plural subjects take plural verbs. • Chicago’s art museumsdisplay priceless paintings.

  12. Plural Examples • Dogsneed to get their energy out. • The runnerspractice for hours everyday. • The boysstudy for their test.

  13. But, wait… • Let’s look at the examples again… • The new museumdisplays works by local artists. • Usually, nouns with an “s” at the end are plural, BUT verbs with an “s” at the end are usually singular…it’s the opposite!! • This may seem confusing, but just remember that nouns and verbs are opposite. If a verb has an “s,” it is probably singular. If a verb does not have an “s,” it is probably plural. Look at the next example. • Chicago’s art museumsdisplay priceless paintings. • The noun here is plural because it has an “s.” The verb is plural because it does not have an “s.”

  14. Main Idea!! • Most nouns that end in s or es are plural. • Most verbs that end in s are singular. The dogs run. The dog runs. Plural noun and verb. Singular noun and verb.

  15. Try it yourself!! • In the following examples, rewrite the sentence so that the verb agrees with its subject. Do this in your notebook!! A medical worker are also known as a health care provider.

  31. Moving on to… HOW TO WRITE YOUR OUTLINE FOR YOUR RESEARCH PAPER!!

  32. Outline • In order to write an outline for our research paper, we need to be able to read the research sources and summarize the main ideas. • By understanding the main points, we will know what facts are important to include into our Greek god research paper.

  33. What is an Outline?!?! It is the best way to get your mind UNJUMBLED when writing any major paper!! An outline is a part of the writing process called “Pre-Writing.” It is a list that outlines all of the information that you would like to include in your paper. The list helps you to put all of your information in order before you begin writing.

  34. How does it do that? An Outline Organizes The Major Parts Of Your Essay: • Your Thesis Statement-The sentence that tells your reader your ultimate point and what they should expect. • You Major Points-The facts that you are using to prove your main point. • Your Supporting Details-The examples, facts, quotations, etc. that further explain and back up each major point. You should have several for each Major Point. • Your Transitions-The statement or information you will use to transition form one major point to the next. This stops your paper from sounding jumpy or disorganized. • Concluding Thoughts-Any thoughts that you would like to include at the close of your paper to wrap things up and tie it all together. NEVER INCLUDE NEW FACTS OR INFORMATION IN YOUR CONCLUSION!

  35. Why Write An Outline? It will help you organize all of the ideas running around your brain!

  36. Why Write An Outline? It will allow you to find any gaps in your research or ideas early enough to fix them.

  37. Why Write An Outline? It will make writing you essay less stressful because you will KNOW what you have to work with.

  38. Why Write An Outline? Teachers are often willing to look over an outline for you to make sure that you are on the right track!! 

  39. Where Do I Start? • Gather all of your research or notes on the topic that you are writing about. (You have done this!!) • Review it all and decide what your research/information is telling you about your topic. • Form a working thesis statement that describes the point that you want to make about your topic. • Begin to select what information you would like to include in your essay based on what proves your point.

  40. What Should my Outline Look Like?? • I am going to pass out a worksheet that has the structure for an outline. • It is empty, so that you fill it out based on your research. • YOU MUST TAKE NOTES IN YOUR NOTEBOOK, SO YOU KNOW WHAT TO WRITE IN EACH SECTION. • THIS IS YOUR ASSIGNMENT and must be filled out completely and thoroughly. • Let’s take a look at each section!!

  41. Introduction How are you going to create the interest in the reader?? Use on of the opening sentence strategies. Who, what, when, where of your topic?? What is the main idea of your paper, and how are you going to answer the prompt?? I. Introduction- Hook: Intro/Background Knowledge: Assertion/Thesis:

  42. FIVE BODY PARAGRAPHS On the back of your blue graphic organizer, I have clearly detailed what information needs to go in each paragraph. Follow that format, and take a look at how to complete the outline…

  43. Outline-Body Paragraphs Main idea of this paragraph Supporting Details Another main idea of this paragraph Supporting Details Another main idea of this paragraph Supporting Details • II. Body Paragraph #1- • Topic Sentence: • A. • 1. • 2. • B. • 1. • 2. • C. • 1. • 2.

  44. Conclusion!! Summarize briefly the research you wrote in your paper. What did you say in your thesis. Do not re-write it, restate it in a different way. Just like you have to “hook” the reader, make sure they remember your paper, too!! • V. Conclusion- • Sum up your evidence: • Restate your assertion: • Leave your reader with a lasting impression:

  45. Homework!! • Make sure to bring all of your writing supplies to class on Tuesday because you will be given time to work.
