Austro-Hungarian Empire Saint Germain-en-Laye
Post War Situation • Austria at the end of the war had lost a considerate amount of people as well as money. Their military power had been diminished. The other countries aka the Allies, felt that Austria was in part responsible for the war and as such should face harsh punismhent.
Austro-Hungarian Empire • Austro-Hungarian Empire • This treaty was signed on the 10th of September 1919 • The treaty generally states that the Austro-Hungarian Empire is responsible and is held accountable for the destruction caused by the war. Furthermore it states that it is now the Republic of Austria.
Political outcomes • The Austro Hungarian Empire was dissolved and in its stead became the Republic of Austria, Yugoslavia, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, and Poland. • Furthermore the Dual Monarchy was disposed • Restricted political union with Germany • Austria had to refrain from jeopardizing its independence • Areas such as islands in the Dalmatia region, and Bukovania given to Italy and Romania respectively.
Economic Outcomes • New government that is set up by Allies, thus more trading options with countries like UK, and France. • Reduction of area used for agriculture, less GDP and income through. • Money used to pay reparations to the Allies, causing inflation. • Vast reduction in the amount of resources, this reduced production, and thus affected economic income. • Restricted economic union with Germany
Military outcomes • Army was reduced to 3o,ooo volunteers, this made Austria vulnerable to attack, as well as being unable to attempt any conquests. • Railroad control was diminished, this severely restricted mobility, and mobilization speed.
Hungary • Hungary gains independence • Austro-Hungarian Empire split, and land given to Hungary • Weak economy, post war depression • Romanian-Hungarian War of 1919 • Jewish minority don’t integrate
Romania • Romania • Bukovina given to Romania after Romania attacked to reclaim land they believed to be theirs • Romanian-Hungarian War 1919 • Jews didn’t integrate into the system and such were discriminated against.
Assessments of the treaty • Lloyd George thinks that the treaty is moderate, and agrees to sign the treaty. • Clemenceau thinks that the treaty isn’t harsh enough, but still ratifies the treaty as the lesser of two evils • Wilson thought the treaty was top harsh. Due to disagreement by the US public, they didn’t ratify the treaty • Many in Austria think that the treaty is too harsh, and some even want to join with Germany. This sentiment could have possibly instigated the rise of the Nazi party as well as Hitler • Hungary doesn’t mind its new found independence
YOUR ASSESSMENT • I believe this treaty was the right choice at that time and without it our modern society might have gone differently. • I believe that it was necessary to demilitarise the Austro-Hungarian Empire but again with moderation. The country will have to have a military small enough not to retaliate, but also needs an army large enough to fend of other countries looking to take advantage of a defenseless country. • I think that this treaty which allows Independence to different • I agree that Austria should have to pay reparations because they were a leading cause for the war. However I think that the amount of money that has to be paid to the Allies, doesn’t need to exceed the GDP, and allows the possibility for the economy to regain momentum. This treaty asks ( in my opinion) too much. • Solution to causes of WWI? Which why, which not and why not?
