Appendix 1 Australian Labour force Some definitions • Labour force = Employed persons (Full time + Part time) + Unemployed persons • Employed persons - Age 15 to 64 currently employed (work for at least 1 hour per week for payment or payment in kind including those who work without pay in a family business or farm) – includes self employed, workers on leave (paid or unpaid), on strike, on workers’ compensation • Full time – work for 35 hours or more a week • Part time – work for more than 1 hour but less than 35 hours • Unemployed person - Age 15 to 64 currently available for work and actively looking for work or waiting to start a new job. They have to be registered with accredited job agencies, be available for work, making job applications and attending interviews.
Appendix 1 Australian Labour force Some definitions • Participation Rate = Labour force x 100% Working Age Population • Working Age Population – all persons who are age 15 to 64 • Unemployment rate = Number of people unemployed x 100% Labour force
