What is Brass? • Different types of Brass • Must contain varying amounts of copper and zinc • Copper typically in highest quantity
Properties of brass include: • Characteristic gold color • Malleable (hammered into sheets) • Resistant to corrosion • Acoustic properties (musical instruments) • Nonmagnetic
Different elements added to change properties of brass • Tin or aluminum ( harder and corrosion resistant) • Combinations of aluminum, iron, silicon, and manganese for wear and tear resistance
Brass in Time • Very difficult to make due to melting point of zinc • Copper was ground and melted with ores containing zinc • Used in: • Jewelry • Helmets • Coins • Church decorations and mirrors • Clocks • Navigational aids
Brazen bull was torture device that took advantage of heat conducting properties of brass • Set of tubes and pipes could be used to make screams seem like cow sounds
Brass Today • Easily manufactured • Fittings (bolts and nuts) • Fixtures (doorknobs, locks) • Doorknobs in hospitals because bacteria die within eight hours
Rifle cartridges • Musical instruments
