What is colony collapse disorder? Colony Collapse Disorder refers to the complete absence of adult honey bees in a colony, with few or no dead adults remaining behind.
Environmental Effects -affecting more than 22 states -production of crops (pollination and honey production) -nuts, fruits, vegetables and berries -2.4 honeybee colonies in US -increasing so much -honeybee colonies have dropped 2.5 million since the 40’s
SocialEffects -crops and agriculture -many crops rely on honeybees -our favourite foods -farming has evolved the past few decades -habitat loss and pesticides -beekeepers are paid to bring their bees to help pollinate crops
Economic Issues -almond pollination season -California, every February, bringing 1 million hives which 40 million honeybees -within the next few weeks, bees pollinate 80% of worlds almond crop -worth ~$1 billion in exports -avocados, apples, cherries, and melons -$15 billion worth of crops in the U.S pollinated each year
Different Perspectives… -CNN believes virus in Australian bees may play factor in collapse of U.S honey bees -CCD first started happening in the states in 2004, which was the exact time that American bees were imported from Australia -Israeli Acute Paralysis Virus (IAPV) -Australian bees seem to be fine -other factors as well -linked to pesticides -Bayer -US EPA agrees with this
SOLUTIONS… -Protect the remaining bees Innovative methods: -Removing bees with diseases from colonies- Conserve bees that are resistant to disease and breed them -Parasites and pesticides have been a main cause to bees deaths-Some pesticides have been suspended, to help regain bee colonies
Local Issue Involving CCD -Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) are dealing with a mysterious case of 20,000 bees that disappeared-The bees were perfectly healthy -Died within 2 days-No one knows what caused their death-Too early to tell what happened-Colony Collapse Disorder may have been a reason-Also, the queen bee may not have layed enough eggs: not enough worker bees-The ROMs hive will be replenished in the spring
