DF1 Objectives • Demonstrate the first industrial scale production of Hydrogen Power with minimal CO2 emissions from power production • Demonstration plants will: • Test the technology • Test the desire and ability of government to provide enabling: • Incentive Policy • Regulation around carbon capture and sequestration • The demonstration plants need to: • Use favourable locations where several suitable assets are in close proximity • Test the critical technologies and their integration starting with more simple configurations • Assist the development of sustainable incentive policy • Promote the development of realistic and practical regulation.
Why did DF1 initiate the research project ? Assist in the development relevant standards for UK Dense phase CO2 release behaviour Lack of validated dense phase CO2 dispersion models Define a Project standard for impact on people from CO2 exposure for Major Accident Hazard risks
CO2 Experiments Spadeadam CO2 Experiments – 1 minute video
CO2 Experiments Need for model validation on CO2 Completed a series of experiments at Spadeadam Blind modelling – release rate - dispersion We can now say - complex and simple (with adjustment) models performed well
CO2 Human harm Criteria for Major Hazardassessments in DF1 Although there is considerable experience with handling large volumes of CO2 (e.g. in the CO2 pipelines of the US), to-date MAH impairment criteria have not been defined MAH impairment criteria require to be relatively simple rule sets that can be applied repeatedly within numeric analysis CO2 MAH harm to people criteria are currently being confirmed within BP 05 September 2014
What have we achieved ? DF1 Without the CO2 Research Project DF1 With the CO2 Research Project No major accident harm criteria No confirmation of CO2 models No licence to operate Peterhead, Pipeline and Miller Proposal for major accident harm criteria for people Confirmed CO2 release rate models Confirmed CO2 dispersion models Robust basis for Peterhead, Pipeline and Miller Safety Cases
