What is a verb? A verb is a word used to express action, a condition, or a state of being. (Write this definition on your paper.)
There are three kinds of verbs. (Write “Three Kinds of Verbs” on your paper on the first line.)
1. Action Verbs Tells what the subject does. (The action can be physical or mental.)
Examples: PHYSICIAL: The fish swims in water. MENTAL: I believe in the tooth fairy.
Transitive or Intransitive? • An action verb is transitive if it has a direct object. • An action verb is intransitive if it does NOT have a direct object.
Example • The boy hit the ball. • HIT is the verb, and BALL is the direct object. The verb HIT is transitive. • I went to the park. • WENT is the verb, but there is no direct object. The verb WENT is intransitive.
2. Linking Verbs Links the subject of the sentence to a word in the predicate. This word is called a Subject Complement.

Predicate Nominative A noun or pronoun that follows the linking verb Renames the subject Predicate Adjective An adjective that follows the linking verb Describes the subject Subject Complements
Examples: Bailey sounds happy. (Happy describes Bailey) Mr. Thomas is an engineer. (Engineer renames Mr. Thomas)
3. Helping Verbs Helps the main verb express action or show time. They are combined with the main verbs to form verb phrases.
