Who we are • FOJASSIDA– Fórum Juvenil de Apoio à Saúde e Prevenção do SIDA • Vision –Angola free from AIDS, malaria and social exclusion • Mission – To promote the wellbeing of residents of Cazenga municipality by intervening in the area of HIV, malaria and social participation of youth FOJASSIDA 2015

HIV and Youth in Luanda Province • Home to 26.9% of the population • 10.1% HIV positivity rate among adults tested in 2013, the highest in the country • 12% of deliveries in 2013 were to adolescent mothers Cazenga municipality • Community involvement mechanism exist but not youth friendly • 862,351 residents in 42.6 Km2 • 11.8% HIV positivity rate among adults tested in 2013 FOJASSIDA 2015

FOJASSIDA’S Strategy • Partnership with MSH, Angola’s Education and Health Ministries • Identification of 4 schools • Review of youth-friendly existing methologies in • STIs, HIV and AIDS • Stigma and Discrimination • Gender • Human Rights • Sexual and Reproductive Health • Leadership • Selection and training of 38 students • Constant follow-up with students in their role as peer educators FOJASSIDA 2015

  9. Methodologies Review of • Stepping Stone • Positive Living • Bridges of Hope (PSI) The Bridges of Hope methodology aims to strengthen the capacity of young people to achieve their dreams. It helps them live free of HIV and overcome other barriers that can prevent them from achieving these dreams. FOJASSIDA 2015

  10. Bridges of Hope In 2014, the methodology started to be delivered by youth peer educators (12-16 years) FOJASSIDA 2015

Results achieved in 10 months With an investment of 4,620 USD for direct activities, 25 peer educators (9 boys and 16 girls), achieved the following: • 1,400 youth and young adults (56% women) reached with HIV prevention messages through small group interventions • 1,123 people referred to counseling and testing at the local hospital. 12% of the tests were positive and receive further support from FOJASSIDA • Average of 5 young women pregnant in the 4 achools, went down to 2 • More dialogue initiated from youth with parents and teachers FOJASSIDA 2015

Spill over effects The following activities have continued beyond the FOJASSIDA-MSH partnership, led by the youth: • Dissemination of key messages by the youth on the local radio station & FOJASSIDA’s Facebook page with 400 active members • Creation of 16 youth clubs at the schools led by youth and supported by the schools • Health talks at various venues including private companies • Recruitment of other youth to participate • Youth are sought after by teachers, parents and other youth Youth exhibit leadership characteristics of scanning, focusing, aligning & mobilizing and inspiring others FOJASSIDA 2015

  14. Conclusions Mobilizing youth as volunteers, peer educators helps government initiatives as well as create opportunities for youth to develop leadership skills. FOJASSIDA 2015
