Hydrostatic, Geostrophic, Bousineque Seminar: 2Rotating Stratified Flow

Explore the Hydrostatic, Geostrophic, and Bousineque approximations in a seminar on 2Rotating Stratified Flow led by Charles Dong and Greg King from the School of Marine Sciences at NUIST in June-July 2014. This seminar covers topics such as Thermal Wind Relationship, Inertial Motion, and Ekman Flow including surface and bottom Ekman flow. Discover the Thermal Wind Limitation of Geostrophic Currents and why geostrophic currents cannot evolve with time due to certain balances and constraints.

  2. Seminar 2Rotating Stratified Flow Charles Dong, Greg King School of Marine Sciences, NUIST 2014 June-July

  3. Outline • Thermal Wind Relationship • Inertial Motion • Ekman Flow (surface and bottom Ekman flow)

  4. Thermal Wind Relationship Thermal Wind

  5. Limitation of Geostrophic Currents • Geostrophic currents cannot evolve with time because the balance ingnores acceleration of the flow. • The geostrophic balance does not apply near the equator where the Coriolis force goes to zero. • The geostrophic balance ignores the influence of friction.

  6. Inertial Motion Inertial currents are the free motion of parcels of water on a rotating plane.

  7. Ekman Flow
