3. PRIVATEAPPLICATOR RECERTIFICATION 2003-2005 Changes to the N.C. Private Pesticide Applicator Regulations and Security and Storage of Pesticides North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services Food & Drug Protection Division, Pesticide Section 2003-2005

4. Why were changes made to the private applicator regulations? • EPA had been encouraging N.C. to update its standards for the past several years. • N.C. was one of only 7 states not requiring a written exam for certification. • It is important that Private Applicators keep informed and up-to-date on all pesticide related issues.

5. What changes were made? • New Private Applicators will now be required to pass a written examination. • All Private Applicators will now be required to obtain 2 hours of “specialty training”.

6. What has stayed the same? • Private Applicators who currently hold valid certification will not be required to pass a written exam. • Private Applicators will still be required to attend the mandatory recertification class (safety training) at their local CES every 3 years. • Private Applicators who fail to renew their cards by their recertification deadline (Sept. 30 of the third year of their certification period) will be required to pass a written exam to obtain a new card.

8. How will I be able to obtain the two extra renewal credits? Attend specialized training that offers renewal credit. This credit is now designated as the “X” category. Examples: Grower meetings Field days Crop tours CES pesticide training

10. How can I be sure that I receive my credits? • You must sign an attendance roster and write down your social security number. • Your writing must be legible. • Keep your own records of the classes you attend.

12. How will I know how many credits I have? • NCDA & CS will mail transcripts once a year to all pesticide applicators listing classes attended and credits earned. • After you receive your transcript, call the Pesticide Section (919-733-3556) ASAP to correct any discrepancy with your record.

14. How do I get my renewal application? • Mailed from NCDA & CS – not from local Extension office. • Check information for correctness (name, address etc.) and sign after reading attestation statement. • Return to NCDA & CS with a check or money order.

General Storage Requirements • Do not store pesticides as to contaminate food, feed, beverage, eating utensils, tobacco, seed, fertilizer or other pesticides • Follow label recommendations for storage, i.e. temperatures and restricted sites • Store to prevent unauthorized access • Store pesticides in an area that is dry and ventilated • Store pesticides free of combustibles and other fire hazards

42. Fire Hazard Prevention • Store pesticides away from items that may be fire hazards • Have a plan in case there is a fire or spill on your farm

43. Disposal Assistance • Abandoned pesticides and containers can create problems for family members and new property owners. • For information on pesticide disposal and container recycling, contact your local CES or the Pesticide Section.
