Introduction to Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing • Why do you think it is important to study psychiatric nursing? • In the United States, mental illnesses is the nation’s second leading cause of disability, and mental illness has been classified as a public health crisis. • You will encounter people with mental illnesses in inpatient, outpatient, medical-surgical settings, intensive care units, emergency departments, obstetrics, and pediatrics. • Your mental health nursing skills will help you think critically and creatively as they empower clients by helping them restore their sense of value, strength, and ability to cope with life.

Suicide • Suicide is a serious public health challenge that has not received the attention and degree of national priority it deserves. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data indicate that in 1999 there were 29,199 deaths from suicide in that year, there were more than 152,000 hospital admissions for self-harming behaviors, and more than 700,000 visits to hospital emergency rooms for similar problem. It also is noteworthy that suicide was the third leading cause of death among youth aged 10-14, third among those 15-24, second among those 25-34 years, and fourth among those 35-44 years. While there are about twice as many deaths from suicide each year as from AIDS, spending on suicide research and prevention was approximately $40 million compared to $3.2 billion for HIV/AIDS research and prevention.
