  1. Outline • Short overview of ToF-L/R HV system • Reason for upgrade of HV system • Possible solutions for upgrade • Description of chosen solution • Current status of HV upgrade

  2. HV System Components 1) Main control unit – CAEN SY527 (10 units – working well – some aging problems) 2) HV Generator modules – CAEN 753 (10 units – 90 channels - working well) 3) HV Distributors modules – CAEN 933 (80 units – 1920 channels - lot of problems due to aging) 4) PC for control and monitoring (working well)

  3. System topology

  4. HV System Status • Falling rate of HV distributors increase during last year • During the November Be run (one month) we lose 4 distributors! • 6 broken distributors sent to CAEN for reparation • When we get themback, we will have only 4 spares, which is not enough to be safe for this year run

  5. Plan for upgrade • Replace two crates in the pit (480 channels) with the new system (first phase - 2012) • Replace another two crates (480 channels) with the new system (second phase – 2013 or 2014) 3) Use replaced crates as source of spare parts for the remaining crates

  6. Plan for upgrade QUESTION buy a new system from manufacturer (CAEN,…) OR produce a custom made, based on resistor divider

  7. CAEN System 1) SY4527 - Universal Multichannel Power Supply System – BASIC 5680 EUR 2) A1932AP - SY1527 H.V. channels +3 KV/500 μA Distributor (48 ch) (Double width) 6,085 EUR 3) A2932AP - SY1527 H.V. channels +3 KV/250 μA Distributor (48 ch) (Single width) 6,085 EUR 4) SW4536 - SY4527 Control software 1,250 EUR

  8. CAEN System

  9. Price for CAEN system 1) 480 channels, phase 1 (two old crates) (5680+10*6085+1250+2*2000) ~72000EUR (150 EUR/ch) 2) 960 channels, phase 2 (four old crates) ~144000EUR (150 EUR/ch) FAR BEYOND OUR POSSIBILITIES! (and still have connectors problems!)

  10. Custom made system • Distributor made as a passive resistors divider • Setting of HV by hand (choosing R) • Basic idea originate from Dubna

  11. Custom made system • Distributor made as a passive resistors divider • Setting of HV by hand (choosing R) • Include monitoring of HV by implementing microcontroller inside every distributor! • Use the same connectors on the back as we already use • Made the standard housing (bin) compatible with standard rack

  12. Price for custom system • 480 channels, phase 1 (two old crates) 15000EUR (~31 EUR/ch) (two crates+20 distributors+4 spare) 2) 960 channels, phase 2 (four old crates) ~30000EUR (~31 EUR/ch) (four crates+40 distributors+8 spare)

  13. Advantage • Electronics is not complicate, expecting robust design, stable work and lower falling rate • Price is ~5 times less comparing to new CAEN system needed to replace the old one • High voltage level can be monitored by control logic in crate by using already existed cables and software in PC located in counting room • Without monitoring can be run in passive mode in old CAEN crate!

  14. Disadvantage • Complicate procedure of setting and calibration • Every distributor board will be unique (according to HV specification for their set of channels) • Control electronic will not be finished until start of the summer run! (But distributor boards can run without monitoring!)

  15. Crate - front

  16. Crate - top

  17. Front panel

  18. Communication

  19. Shematic

  20. Current status • Contract between NA61 and IPB (Institute for Physics, Belgrade) already signed • Mechanical parts ordered, expecting to be delivered till the end of the May • Amphenol connectors ordered from CAEN, will be delivered to the end of June (90 days!) • Electrical design finished • PCB design in progress, will be finish in next few days • PCBs expected at the beginning of June

  21. Conclusion • First working modules (without HV monitoring) expected for mid of July (needed in case of emergency) • Full functionality at the beginning of September • ToF-L/R readout upgrade have to be discuss!
