Terminology: • target – the course into which the student is trying to enroll. • prerequisite – attaining the skills of this course are necessary for successful completion of the target course. • corequisite – concurrently attaining the skills of this course are necessary for the successful completion of the target course. • advisory – attaining the skills in this course will enhance knowledge in the Target course, but are not necessary for success.
What is Validation? • Determining if a student would be “highly unlikely to succeed” without the prerequisite or corequisite course. • Determining if a student could succeed without the advisory course
Who’s responsibility is it? • Discipline faculty • Matriculation Coordinator • Curriculum Committee
Why do it? • Every student in class will be appropriately prepared! • Classes will be easier to teach! • Overall enrollment will stabilize and increase!
When is it due? • Courses adopted prior to July 1990: July 1996 • Courses adopted between July 1990 and Nov. 1993: November 1999 • Courses adopted since November 1993: Should already be validated! • Re-validate during each six-year Program Review.
Types of Courses… • Sequential within a discipline English 64 for English 21 • Cross discipline Chemistry 51 for Microbiology 1 • Cross discipline with an English or Math prerequisite Math 105 for Culinary 111 • Transferable Math 125 for Chemistry 101
Types of Validation… • Content Review: Entry and exit skills For all prerequisites, corequisites, and advisories • University Equivalents: At 3 UC or CSU universities For Transferable target courses • Data Collection: Determine success in quantifiable terms. For English and Math prerequisites only
