Regional E-Waste Management: Strategies for Sustainable Initiatives

This project aims to facilitate the development of sustainable strategies and initiatives for e-waste management in the region. With the increasing use of Electrical and Electronic Equipment, including ICT devices, the proper disposal and management of e-waste have become crucial due to their toxic components. The project focuses on waste characterization, sustainable management, regional manufacturer's association, e-waste fund establishment, and creation of recycling facilities and awareness programs.

Introduction • There has been tremendous increase in the use of Electrical and Electronic Equipment, and ICT equipment in particular. • Considering these equipment have a short lifespan, their disposal and effects on health and the environment are an increasing concern. • The Electrical and Electronic Equipment waste is unique given the toxic nature of its components.

  3. Waste characterization & sustainable management

  4. Wastes constituents as in Annex I (Category of waste to be controlled): Y19 - Y31 many of these wastes are e-wastes, • Annex VIII: Wastes contained in this Annex are characterized as hazardous (Metal & metal bearing wastes)

  5. Regional manufacturer’s association • How each member state has organized its electronic & electric equipment manufacturers ?, • What regulation do we have in terms of EE equipment ?, • How is the application of the EPR principle at country level ?.

  6. Regional e-waste fund • Such fund to be operational at regional level needs involvement of partner state within EAC, • How the fund is going to be sustain? • From regional statistics on electronic equipment penetration per country, • Country contribution to be paid annually in the regional e-waste fund.

  7. How the fund is going to be used ? Creation of regional e-waste drop off or collection center Establishment of regional e-waste management policy Creation of regional e-waste recycling facility

  8. Effective capacity building / training Capacity building / training for manager & technician Awareness raising among local population
