  1. COMMUNITY SAFETYSafe Communities Project A public opinion poll Vukovar – Borovo Naselje June, 2007

  2. Methodology • The research was conducted by means of a phone survey from central location on a sample of 350 citizens of Borovo Naselje • The in-scope population was persons aged 15 years and over • Random sample based on a random number generator • The data were gathered in the beginning of June, 2007

  3. Significance of specific safety issues • Illegal drug/alcohol abuse, firearms possesion and juvenile delinquency were selected as the three most important security problems • Younger citizens (especially those 15-19 yrs. old) are less likely to hold the view that these problems are significant • The community support for collecting of illegal firearms is almost complete (around 98%)

  4. Places of diminished security • About 11,1% of respondents sometimes feel insecure in dark streets with non-existent street lighting, additional 6,9% of citizens feel insecure around abandoned buildings • Most citizens (around 88%) hold the view that the level of security is equal in all town-districts

  5. Comparison with other parts of Croatia • The proportion of community agreeing that their town is safer (as measured by crime rate) than the rest of Croatia amounts to 44%, while almost the same number (43,8%) holds the view that level of security is comparable to the other parts of the country. Only 12,2% of respondents feel that the level of security is lower

  6. Crime incidence and reporting • According to the results of the survey, almost 44% of all crimes haven’t been reported to the police • The most often mentioned reason was the existence of circumstances which make the capture of the perpetrator less likely (lack of traces and/or witnesses, time passage etc.) • None of the respondents selected low quality of police work as a reason for not reporting the incident(s)

  7. Groups at risk • Older citizens are rated as the most vulnerable group regarding the exposure to safety risks • The large majority of citizens (90,3% of the sampled population) confirmed the existence of places that are not well-enough adapted for the movement of people with disabilities

  8. Community policing • About 44,6% of the polled citizens have never seen the contact-officer assigned to their community, while additional 8,2% were not even sure about the existence of the contact-officer. Around 34,5% of citizens have seen their contact-officer but haven’t met him/her personally, whereas 12,7% of citizens have met the contact-officer

  9. Safeguarding people and buildings and preventive work with the youth are seen as the main duties of a contact-officer. To be precise, 79,8% and 76,8% of citizens, respectively, selected these duties as the ones that should be assigned to a contact-officer
