  2. MNI-CECAP • Mississippians Networking to Increase Cancer Education and Cultural Awareness Project (MNI-CECAP) • Originated from CECAP. National project funded by CDC • Target Population: African American women age 18-64 living in underserved communities in Mississippi. • Jackson Metro Area • MS Delta • MS Gulf Coast • Greater Natchez Area

MNI-CECAP Intervention Goals • To promote public policy by increasing the capacity of underserved communities to form and sustain coalitions focused on affecting local and state healthcare policies • To encourage organizational change by increasing the capacity of healthcare workers to provide culturally competent healthcare services to African American women living in underserved communities in MS.

  4. MNI-CECAP Intervention Goals • To support community involvement by training African American women age 18-64 living in underserved communities in MS to become community health advocates.

  5. Objective #1 • To increase the capacity of 4 underserved communities to build and sustain local coalitions. (09/15/2010) • Measured by: • number of coalition building trainings conducted in target areas • participant sign-in sheets Status: Completed • 4 trainings conducted (Jackson, Biloxi, Cleveland and Lorman, Mississippi • 103 individuals trained

  6. Coalition Building TrainingParticipant Feedback • 100% agreed/strongly agreed that “I learned new skills related to health promotion and planning”. • 100% agreed/strongly agreed “I can apply the information I learned at the session in the next 3 months”.

  7. Objective #2 Offer culturally competent TA to 20 healthcare organizations in target areas. (01/31/2010) • Measured by: number of invitation letters sent AND number of organizations listed in database. • Status: Completed • 38 invitation letters sent • 38 organizations listed in database • 3 TA requests received • 24 community stakeholders trained on coalition building

  8. Objective #3 Train 25 women as CHEIs (09/15/2010) • Measured by: number of participants receiving certificates of completion Status: • 31 women trained as CHEIs • Jackson (8) • MS Delta (9) • Gulf Coast (5) • Greater Natchez Area (10)

CHEI Training Format • Day 1 – Instructor Training • Health disparities • Methods for enhancing community health education sessions • Breast and cervical cancer prevention and awareness • Stages of Behavior Change • Day 2: Certification Examination • 25 multiple choice questions • 15-20 minute teach-back exam

  11. CHEI Training Participant Feedback • 95% of the participants strongly agreed that their awareness about cancer prevention had increased due to the training • 95% agreed that they learned new skills related to cancer prevention education
