  1. “Time Management & Balance in College” Socratic Seminar #1 Mr. Montgomery – August 31, 2012 FORM ONE SINGLE CIRCLE IN FRONT OF MY DESK, EVERYONE ON THE FLOOR By PresenterMedia.com

  2. Guidelines & Expectations What does a Socratic Seminar look like in “College Writing?” • A seminar is a genuine discussion. • As the name suggests, a seminar is meant to be a different kind of class (or instructional strategy). The seminar is designed to enable students to explore a text, a problem, an experience; it is not a more conversational form of teacher-led instruction. Rather, it is the students’ opportunity to ask and consider questions and explore each others’ answers. • In short, it becomes the student’s opportunity and responsibility to develop habits and skills that are traditionally reserved for the teacher.

  3. Guidelines & Expectations What does Mr. Montgomery want you to learn to do? • How to discuss an idea or content • Lead a discussion • Listening for insights in the comments of others • Propose alternative paths of conversation • How to help dialogue move beyond superficial but unconnected sharing to sustained & thought provoking dialogue.

  4. Guidelines & Expectations • My Job • A Co – Colleague • Students Job • Students must come to know that their job is different. It is not to sit passively and await instruction or answers, or only to say whatever pops into their mind. Your job is to come to a common and an individual understanding of what something means. In the broadest sense, the goal is to make sense of a question.
