REFEDs aim (REFEDs roadmap) • Address the need of existing and emerging education and research federations worldwide to collaborate on policy issues • To learn from each other • To align policy to facilitate interfederation • To reach the community outside research and education • TERENA coordinates REFEDs work

  3. REFEDs roadmap homeworks

  4. 1. Interfederation business (Mikael Linden, CSC) • document best practices for federation governance (2-3 examples) analysis and comparison; • collecting membership models; • describing federation business models (2-3 examples); • collecting use cases for inter-federation mainly at international level. An obvious candidate for this would be how federations plan to support eScience.

  5. 2. Policy Coordination (TERENA) • Definition of a common template for federation’s agreement (JISC) • SAML Metadata Aggregation Practice Statement (SMAPS) and for SAML Metadata Signing Policy (SMSP). (Rodney McDuff, Univ of Queensland) • SAML auditor’s framework (Rodney McDuff)

  6. 3. Privacy and Data protection (Andrew Cormack, JANET) • to develop suggested good practice for identity federation operators and participants to reduce the transfer of personal data • Data protection directive and Article 29 Working Party

  7. 4. Alignment and maintenance of LOA profiles (Nicole Harris, JISC) • Investigating existing definitions of LoAs • Agreeing on standard definitions of LoAs • Defining documents to provide recommendations on the usage of the appropriate LoA

  8. 5. Attribute coordination (Victoriano Giralt, Univ. Malaga) • aggregating information about use of specific attributes • identification of needs for new schema for new communities

Outreach (TERENA) • To make REFEDS more visible • The website should explain what REFEDs is, who the stakeholders are and its objectives • a simple roadmap to help new R&E federations to set up their federations • Proactively reach out communities such as IDABC, STORK and Article 29 Working Party, Liberty Alliance and IETF
