Technology Mission Private Sector Grading & Packing Sheds • Target: 100 • Cases received: 92 • Forwarded to NHB: 92 • Cases referred to Banks by NHB: 76 Shortfalls • Banks showed poor response in releasing Term Loan. • Only 8 cases sanctioned till date. Measures • Persuading Banks for quick credit facility.
FRUIT PRODUCTION: ECONOMIC ASPECT • Over 5 Lakh families involved • Over 27 Lakh growers involved. • Rs.1600.00 Crore income from fresh fruits • Rs.300.00 Crore income from dry fruits • Generates employment: 1 Ha=1.3 person-days/year. • Over 7 Crore boxes of fruit exported/year.

A Farmer’s Perspective • Small holdings (average orchard size 0.40 ha) • Access to market opportunities severely constrained by • Long transport lead • Uncertainty of transport • Lack of organised sector provision of credit: dependence on commission agents • Absence of grading and quality control systems • Lack of information on consumer preferences • Non-transparent price setting in markets • Absence of on-farm storage
The Outcome • Bunching of supply of ungraded apples in the market • Depresses overall prices • Inhibits investment to increase productivity at the farm level
