  2. What is the function of external ports? Computer ports are places on the computer where external devices may be connected for transmission of data. These Devices Include: • External Storage Devices • Display Devices • Human Input Devices • Networking Devices

  3. Older Computer Ports

  4. Parallel (DB-25) Port The parallel port is typically reserved for printers and older peripherals. It has 25 pins total, and is secured with screws on either side. The cable is not hot swappable The parallel port started to lose popularity in the early 2000’s when USB printers gained favour.

  5. Serial (DB-9) Port The DB-9 port is a simple, 9 pin port that was used in the 1980’s for a variety of peripherals, including mice, keyboards, and modems. It is almost completely phased out today.

  6. PS/2 (Mini-DIN) Port The PS/2 port was introduced in the late 1980’s as a port exclusively for keyboards and mice. They are usually color coded as purple for keyboard, and green for mouse. The port was used for a long time, but were phased out by USB peripherals in the mid 2000’s.

  7. Firewire (IEE 1394) Port Firewire was a port introduced by Apple in 1995, and was a port for connecting a variety of devices. It had faster speeds than USB 1.0, but fell out of favour when USB 2.0 achieved similar speeds.

  8. Modem (RJ 11) Port RJ 11 ports were used in in the 80’s and 90’s to access dial-up networks. They plugged directly into the telephone lines. The RJ 11 port started to disappear with the coming of broadband networks, and the RJ 45 port.

  10. USB Ports (Universal Serial Bus) These things allow you to connect to many things and versatile and simple to use

  11. Network/Ethernet The ethernet cable that is used for most modern networking on computers. This port is also known as a RJ-45 jack

  12. Sound jacks The headphone jack is 3.5mm and others are used for speakers and or microphones

  13. VGA/DVI/HDMI These are all used for video on a monitor. • VGA is the common • DVI is used for more modern video and has slightly different pins • HDMI is the highest quality video and can also accept audio input

  14. Common Devices The following devices are common on modern computers.

  15. Monitors The 3 main categories of monitors are: CRT - Cathode Ray Tube LCD - Liquid Crystal Display LED - Light Emitting Diode

  16. Monitors Continued Size - The distance of the monitor from corner to corner Resolution - The number of pixels in the monitor. Aspect Ratio - The ratio of width to height of the monitor Refresh Rate - The number of times the monitor refreshes the image in one second.

  17. Keyboard and Mouse • Typically are connected by USB. • Can be wired or wireless • Keyboards can have different switches in them, either Mechanical, rubber dome, or scissor.

  18. Printers Inkjet - Prints by shooting ink out a small hole in the printer head. Laser - Uses a laser and drum to transfer toner to paper.
