Joel Iwataki “Sound Engineer“
Born in New York City in 1951, Joel Iwataki left school at nineteen to pursue a career as a commercial fisherman in Alaska, skippering a boat he built and running a small clam cannery in the Prince William Sound.
He returned to California to study music at the Grove School in Los Angeles and composition and orchestration with film composers’ ìAlbert Harris and Richard Markowitz.
Joel Iwataki has been nominated for many awards and has won Primetime Emmy Awards, Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Variety or Music Series or Special XIX Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony (2002).
J Joel Iwataki has also worked as a music producer for Othello: suite from the ballet VarèseSarabande and Juan Darien: a carnival mass Sony Classical.
Joel Iwataki served on the board of the Pacific Composers Forum in Los Angeles from 1987-1990 and composed music for 2 musicals: “Canton Jazz Club”, produced at East West Players in Los Angeles in 1991 and “Beijing Spring” produced at East West Players in 1996 and again in a revival in 2006.
On hearing Joel Iwataki's scores other composers would ask him to help mix their projects. After meeting the great film composer Elliot Goldenthal, Joel made film score mixing his career.
