Adverbs are modifiers and can modify verbs, adjectives or other adverbs. Adverbs tell us in what way someone does something. What are Adverbs?
Mandy is a careful driver. Adjective vs. Adverbs Mandy drives. • Mandy is a driver. Mandy drivescarefully. verb noun • This sentence is about Mandy, the driver, so it uses the adjective CAREFUL to describe her. • This sentence is about her way of driving, so uses the adverb Carefully to modify the verb drives.

Tip: Not all words ending in -ly are adverbs. adjectives ending in -ly: friendly, silly, lonely, ugly nouns, ending in -ly: ally, bully, Italy, melancholy verbs, ending in -ly: apply, rely, supply There is no adverb for an adjective ending in -ly.
