Announcements • Class attendance • Inquiry 3 grades
Today’s Agenda • Final presentation • Revision guidelines • Inquiry 4 • Chalk & Wire
Revision Checklist Remember that revision isn’t merely changing sentences or adding in punctuation marks or other “nitty-gritty” factors--rather, it’s working to make arguments stronger, taking out portions that don’t fit in, and, often, re-writing and re-working entire sections or entire papers. If you have earned a A- or better on a project, you are not permitted to revise it. In order to submit a revision, you must meet with me, and you are expected to come to this meeting fully prepared--that is, you should absolutely have already read through my comments, looked back at the assignment prompt & grading rubric, and have some ideas for revision and be ready to discuss them, ask me questions about the assignment requirements, etc. I strongly recommend visiting the Howe Writing Center before our meeting, if you need to discuss strategies for revision. You will also compose a new Writer’s Letter, which will address the revision process; a separate prompt will be provided for this as the deadline approaches for submissions. Finally, you will send me both your revision and Writer’s Letter and your original paper/project with my comments.
Steps/requirements for submitting a revised project: 1. Meet with me 2. Revise your project/paper. 3. Compose a new Writer’s Letter (which will address the revision process; prompt TBA), which should be the first page of your revision. 4. Find your original paper/project with my comments. 5. Submit these two documents--your revision document (WL + revised paper/project) and your original paper/project with my comments--to me via email by class time May 3rd. Please note that if you fail to do any of the steps/requirements listed above, I will not re-grade your revision.
Inquiry 4 E-portfolio: each inquiry uploaded to BB. Include drafts, writer’s letters, and final drafts of all major assignments. Reflective paper: 2-4 page paper reflecting on yourself as a writer discussing process and growth. • Writer’s letter
Reflection: • Engaging in a focused, critical evaluation of one’s own work in order to recognize one’s strengths and areas for improvement. A space to discuss your identity as a writer.
Essay description • From this analysis and reflection, students will produce a major essay (2-4 double-spaced pages, minimum 750 words) that analyzes and reflects on their selected writing from the ENG 112 course (and perhaps writing done in other courses and contexts). • Any claim that a student makes must be supported with detailed evidence including, importantly, citations and quotations from their own writing. This essay should not be vague and impressionistic; it should provide deep and sustained analysis and reflection and develop and support an argument.
Questions to ask • If you could redo one essay for this class what would it be and why? • Describe your writing process, from beginning to end, for one of your essays. • What aspect of the writing process do you struggle the most with? What aspect is easiest? • Explain how you have changed as a writer over the course of the semester. • Of all the things you learned in this class, what do you think will help you most in the future?
