Taft’s Presidency • Presidential term: 1909-1913 • Won easily with TR’s backing • Bad start • Conflict over tariffs ran on platform to lower tariffs • Payne-Aldrich Tariff • lowered some tariffs, but some protection for increasing tariffs • Progressives mad at Taft
Ballinger-Pinchot Affair • Secretary of Interior: Richard Ballinger (Taft’s choice) • Wanted businesses to have unrestricted development • Head of U.S. Forest Service: Pinchot (not a favorite with Taft) • Wanted land to be studied for best use • Ballinger allowed businesses to buy land in Alaska • Pinchot said corruption was involved • Taft fired Pinchot • Pinchot became hero, Ballinger later resigned, Taft not popular
