  1. Field EcologyFour-day Workshop A Component of Athabasca University’s BIOL 345: Ecology

  2. Objective 1 Use some basic equipment and techniques of terrestrial and freshwater ecology.

  3. Objective 2 Determine some of the limitations of the (theoretical) definitions of basic ecological terms when they are applied in the real world.

  4. Objective 3 Discuss the kinds of machine and human errors and biases involved in using measuring devices and techniques.

  5. Objective 4 Discuss the importance of proper collection, preservation, and identification of organisms for ecological studies.

  6. Objective 5 Undertake preliminary research in ecological scientific literature.

  7. Objective 6 Explain limitations of current research methods and scientific knowledge.

  8. Day 1: Physical Factors • instruments – precision versus accuracy • temperature • water/humidity • nutrients of soil and water, e.g., N, P, K • wind/current • pH • O2 and CO2

  9. Day 2: Terrestrial Producers • quadrats and transects • productivity • collection and preservation • identification • ecological terminology

  10. Day 3: Terrestrial Consumers • sampling methods (various nets and traps) • ethics and legalities of collecting • preservation and identification • kinds of consumers • trophic levels

  11. Day 4: Aquatic Consumers • sampling methods • preservation and identification • food chains and webs

  12. Habitat 1:Forest

  13. Habitat 2:Meadow

  14. Habitat 3:Lentic (pond and lake)

  15. Habitat 4:Lotic (river and stream)

  16. Availability • The four-day Field Ecology Workshop is held only in the summer in Athabasca, Alberta. • Students can take the workshop up to 14 months after their initial enrolment in the course.
