  1. Mark 13 – Exposition The Olivet Discourse

  2. view from mount of olives

  3. Mark 13: 1-4 • As Jesus was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher! What massive stones! What magnificent buildings!” • 2 “Do you see all these great buildings?” replied Jesus. “Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.” • 3 As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John and Andrew asked him privately,4 “Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?”

  4. the temple

  5. the western wall

  6. events regarding the temple

  7. Jesus greater than the temple • I tell you that one greater than the temple is here. – Matt 12:6 • My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations. – Mark 11:17

  8. Jesus greater than the temple • For the Pharisees, the temple and its rules seemed more important than God. • It’s glorification caused it to become an idol. • Sometimes, the best things become idols, and God is in the habit of destroying our idols. • … you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. - Jn 4:21 • … true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, … - Jn 4:23

  9. idols and monuments in our lives • What are the good things that have become idols in my life – more important than they should be or God? • church? friends? music? health? phone? • What monuments am I blindly loyal to? • traditions? festivals? sports teams?

  10. the prophesy • Prophesy was literal • AD 70 Romans took apart the temple to extract melted gold in the bricks • Prophesy was true for the near future as well as distant future • Vs. 14 – When you see the ‘abomination that causes desolation’ standing where it does not belong – let the reader understand – let those in Judea flee to the mountains.

  11. other prophesies: vs. 5-8 • false prophets and false messiahs • when desperate, we are willing to believe anything • wars and rumors of wars • “do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.” vs. 7 • earthquakes and famines • But “beginning of birth pangs”

  12. more prophesies: vs. 9-12 • persecution of the disciples – persecution of the church • vs. 11 not an excuse to not study God’s Word • we stand in prayer with our brother and sisters wherever there is persecution • introspect how we would fare under persecution? • Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Vs. 12 • has my comfort produced a complacency? • What if persecution was imminent? What would I do?

  13. sure-shot prophecy • “But in those days, following that distress, “‘the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; 25 the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’ • Mentioned at least 6 different places in the Bible

  14. plausible theory • earthquake • churning of oceans • rolling away of the sky • darkening/reddening of the sun and moon • asteroid shower appearing as stars falling

  15. purpose of the prophesies • What it is definitely not: • to calculate the times of Jesus’ return or end time • to make us think about it all the time • to worry and lose hope • Instead, to • keep us informed – I have told you everything ahead of time. Vs.23 • warn us to be alert – Be on guard! Be alert! Vs. 33

  16. what exactly must we do? • be alert and self-controlled, with faith and love and hope – 1 Th 5:6 • If Jesus were coming today, how would I want to be found?

  17. finally • Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. Vs. 31 • … but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. Vs. 13 • Prophesies show that ultimately God is in control and transcends over time and the affairs of man • Prove that God’s word is true, consistent, and always fulfilled • Jesus cares for us as individuals in the grander scheme of things • Ultimately, Jesus, and we, will triumph, provided we stay faithful till the end
