  4. THE BIG IDEA • We are the “beloved of God” through the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ. • “Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God,...2 Beloved, now we are children of God;…” (1 John 3:1a & 2a, NKJV)

  5. SO WHAT? • What is God saying to me about my positionin Christ? • Where am I finding my approval(spiritually, emotionally, morally, etc.)? • What should I learn today about my relationshipwith God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, His churchand others?

MATTHEW 3:13-15 (NKJV) • 13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. 14 And John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?” 15 But Jesus answered and said to him, “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him.

MATTHEW 3:16-17 (NKJV) • 16 When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. 17 And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

  8. 1. THE SON’S ACTIONS (3:13-15) • The REQUEST – “to be baptized by John” • The REASON– “to fulfill all righteousness” • The RESULT – Jesus identified with sinful man and obeyed the Father in all things. This act set the examplefor all who will follow Him as a fully devoted disciple.

  9. 1st Century Judaism • They believed that one was made righteous by keeping the law, and they believed themselves to be righteous in this way. • They often misinterpreted the law. • They held many traditions to be of equal authority to Scripture. • They were often hypocrites in their practice, neglecting the core and spirit of the law for aspects of outward observance.

  10. JEWISH BAPTISM • There was process through which a non-Jew could become a Jewish proselyte, and that process involved three things. A sacrifice, circumcision, and baptism. The sacrifice was a heifer or a pair of turtledoves. It was brought to the priest and given as a burnt offering. • BAPTISM: The person was stripped of all of their clothes, completely naked. They then went into the water (MIKVEH), and dipped themselves being sure to fully immerse their entire body in the water. They were very careful that not one bit of their flesh remained dry as to achieve ritual purity.

NEW TESTAMENT BAPTISM • Baptism is the next stepof obedience after trusting Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord • Baptism publically announces your faith in Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord • Baptism is your public testimony of being a fully devoted follower of Jesus Christ • Baptism identifies you with the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ

  12. SAUL OF TARSUS • 18 “At once something like scales fell from his eyes, and he regained his sight. Then he got up and was baptized. 19 And after taking some food, he regained his strength. Saul was with the disciples in Damascus for some days. 20 Immediately he began proclaiming Jesus in the synagogues: “He is the Son of God” (Acts 9:18-20 (NKJV).

HEAVEN’S APPROVAL (3:16) • The HeavensOPENED -- a direct view • The Dove DESCENDED – the dove symbolized the authority of Heaven and the power of the Holy Spirit resting on and in Jesus Christ • The Heavenly Father SPOKE– here is a picture of the TRINITY = God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit

OUR APPROVAL • “Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me; for You loved Me before the foundation of the world” (John 17:24 NKJV). • “Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us” (1 John 3:24, NKJV).

  15. 3. THE FATHER’S ANNOUNCEMENT (3:17) • HISACCLAMATION-- “This is MY BELOVED SON” • The word agapētos describes something to be truly grateful for, something beautiful and desirable. It has the connotation of being precious because of being the only one. • “The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into His hand” (John 3:35, NKJV).

THE FATHER’S ANNOUNCEMENT (3:17) • HISAFFIRMATION– “In Whom I am well pleased” • The Hebrew word behind “well pleased” is ratsah, and means “delights in.”(Isaiah 42:1) • The Greek word eudokesa (“to think well of or be pleased”) = Aorist Active Indicative means something happened in the past with continuing results…God is continually well-pleased (Colossians 1:19-20).

  17. MATTHEW 12:18, 21 (ESV) • 18 “Behold, my servant whom I have chosen, my beloved with whom my soul is well pleased. I will put my Spirit upon him, and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles…. 21 and in his name the Gentiles will hope.”

COLOSSIANS 1:14, 19-20 (CSB) • 14 In him we have redemption,the forgiveness of sins…. 19“For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him (Jesus), 20 and through him to reconcile everything to himself, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

OUR NEW POSITION • 20 “Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God. 21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthians 5:20-21, NKJV).
