King David: • Shepherd/Poet/King/Holding the covenant of God. • Adultery with Bathsheba and murder. Rahab: • Canaanite woman / prostitute in Jericho. • Helping the people of Israel to take possession of the Promised Land. • One of the ancestors of Jesus Christ (Matthew 1). The saints’ features: • “They conquered kingdoms through faith, administered justice, and received the promise of God’s kingdom” (Hebrews 11: 33). • They deserve God’s blessing and bring God’s kingdom into our present world.
The saints and the cross The Lord’s Prayer: • “Thy kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven.” • We are not only waiting for God’s kingdom but also working to establish it by our good works. • Who can lead us and work for the coming of God’s kingdom in our world? • The political leaders of the world!?
Jesus’ standard of God’s kingdom: • “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven” (vv. 20-23). • How can those unprivileged people be the real movers and shakers of the world history? • “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. If someone takes your cloak, do not stop him from taking your tunic. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back” (vv. 27-30).
Love and forgiveness on the cross: • God’s kingdom breaks through when we forgive and love our enemies. • The Gospel of Jesus: “You are forgiven!” • On the cross, he fulfilled God’s redeeming and saving ministry. • On the cross, Jesus was naked, thirsty, ridiculed, insulted, cursed, and killed. • On the cross, he prayed for his enemies, forgave their sins, and brought God’s reconciliation to all humanity. • On the cross, he has led us to God’s kingdom and brought God’s kingdom in our present lives.
The saints and the ministry of Jesus What makes us saints? the cross of Jesus Christ: • “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life (Jn. 3:16); • “If you forgive others when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.” (Mt. 6:14). • “Love your God with all your heart and love your neighbor as yourself.” • “God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Rom. 5:8). • It is the forgiving and forgiven sinners who deserve God’s kingdom in heaven.
