Is This A Blue Ocean? • Student Leadership Development is used by many colleges and universities to create well rounded and educated individuals. • Yet, most institutions have traditionally only paid minimal attention to the development of their students as leaders in terms of offering specific leadership programs or curricula. Understanding the Nature of SL • Daniel Breen Study (1970) • Questionnaires to 148 colleges, 60 responded, 40 had leadership development programs. • Six commonalities of leadership programs: • Students were always involved in planning the programs • The student activities department took a major role in the planning and implementation of these programs • The best programs cost money • Weekend retreat formats were very popular • Effective programs usually involved small groups and experience-based learning of an interpersonal and problem-solving nature with the theory and lecture kept to a minimum. • Feedback sessions where participants were permitted to react to the program were very beneficial.
