  2. history • Born in 1593 to well-known Roman artist, Orazio Gentileschi. • Followed Caravaggio’s use of putting dramatic events on a plain dark background. • Was a well-known artist in Florence by 1615. • Moved to Rome in 1620. Gentileschi’s artwork • One of most famous artworks: • Judith and Maidservant with the Head of Holofernes • Focused on drama rather than the violence of killing. • Dark shadows, only candlelight, foreshortening of the women’s figures. Baroque movement • Took movement and emotion from the Mannerist style • Took grandeur and solidity from the Renaissance • Artists tried to show emotion, variety, movement, drama, richness, vitality, tension, and exuberance • Did this by appealing to the senses • Leading Baroque figure was Caravaggio • He was Gentileschi’s inspiration • Gentileschi featured people, high level of intensity and expression, violent, women getting revenge from men Judith Beheading Holofernes.
